DIY: 3 Step Heart Garland

This easy 3 step heart garland is sure to bring love your way!

Supplies needed:

Heart shape paper punch

Colored card stock, sheet music or pages from a book

Thread

Sewing Machine

Step 1:

Punch out hearts using various card stocks

(we mixed metallic with matte cardstock and old sheet music)

Step 2:

Sew hearts. We set the stitch length at 3 and aimed for a uniform length between hearts. It helped to put the needle in the paper before sewing each heart so as not to tangle the thread.

Step 3:

Display and admire!

Note:

Be careful with thin text weight stock or old book pages/sheet music as they may fall apart when sewn. It's best to experiment a bit before sewing the final garland. To add a more eclectic look you can vary the size of the hearts or embellish them with glitter.

Paper Snowflake DIY

Not enough snow for a white Christmas? Never fear - we have a DIY snowflake project that will fix that in no time.

We made several of these for our holiday window display and have had many requests for instructions. They are very pretty and quite easy to make requiring only a few supplies.

Note: The snowflakes in the window display are 22" tall, so we have re-sized the instructions to better accommodate house decor.

Here is what you need to get started:

* 7 squares of text weight paper cut to 6.5" x 6.5"

Double sided tape {Tip: if using metallic paper we suggest using a stronger

adhesive such as red liner tape

Paper cutter or scissors

Stapler

Step 1:

Fold the square corner to corner, creating a triangle

Step 2:

Fold triangle in half again

Step 3:

Make 3 cuts running parallel to the edge of the triangle, being

careful not to cut thru center fold

{Tip: for a 6.5" square we made equally spaced cuts however for the 8.5" squares used in our window display we varied the distance for more visual interest and added one extra snowflake point to fill out the snowflake}

Step 4:

Open triangle and lay paper flat

Step 5:

Roll center cuts toward each other and adhere center triangle points with double sided tape

{Tip: use a pencil or your finger to help form center roll}

Step 6:

Flip the paper over and adhere triangle points in the next row.

Step 7:

Flip the paper back over and adhere the next row of triangle points; alternating front to back for the last two rows.

Step 8:

Grab each of the seven snowflake points and staple them together at the top.

Step 9:

Open up the snowflake points and apply double sided adhesive between each of the points.

Your snowflake is now ready for display!

To engrave or not to engrave...

...that is a question that we hear quite often. With the seemingly endless variety of invitation styles and designs available, choosing a wedding invitation can seem an overwhelming task. When considering your bridal stationery budget it is helpful to know the various print methods and costs associated. Here is a simple description of each:

1. Engraving

Engraving is the most traditional printing method for wedding invitations and it is also the most expensive. The hallmark of engraving is sharp, raised print created by a copper or steel die used on a press. The die is engraved with the text and motif and then inked. Excess ink is wiped away and pressure is used to transfer the image onto the paper. To tell if something has been engraved turn it over and you will see a slight indentation on the back of the paper where the line of type falls.

2. Letterpress

Letterpress was created by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid 15th Century, and has seen an increase in popularity over the last several years. Instead of raised print, letterpress is a relief printing which uses a reverse raised surface which is then pressed into cotton or bamboo paper. Custom press plates are required and the labor involved can make it almost as expensive as engraving.

2. Thermography

Thermography was created to mimic the raised print of engraving at greatly reduced price. To achieve the raised print, powder is added to the wet ink and the paper is then heat set creating a raised effect.

4. Flat/Digital Printing

The least expensive print method is digital printing. Printing methods vary from laser to giclee and invitations printed in this manner can be just as beautiful, and much more affordable, then the above mentioned print methods.

No matter your budget, there are plenty of design and print styles for invitations that best represent your personality. 5 Thanksgiving Place Card Ideas

Henry Street Harvest Festival

Recycle those holiday cards!

Wondering what to do with the holiday cards after the decorations are put away? Bring them to PaperDolls by February 21st and we'll send them to the St. Jude's Ranch Card Recycling Program. The children at the ranch make new cards by removing the fronts of the cards and attaching them to a new backing. The cards are then packaged and sold to raise money for the ranch.

Speaking of cards, Sherry Czarnecki from Amuse Stamps will be back on January 30th to teach two sessions of Valentine card making classes. Stay tuned for more information!

Are you prepared for the barrage of holiday cards that will soon be filling your mailbox? Perplexed as to how to display them in a festive manner? Here is our solution: a garland created out of ribbon clipped with paper covered clothespins!

These are easy to make and have an array of holiday uses (clip one to a package with your card, lay one on its side on the counter and use it to hold a recipe card while you whip up a batch of your favorite Christmas cookies, or glue a magnet on the back and place on your fridge to hold holiday party invitations).

Stop by the store on Friday, November 27th and make 2 clips for $1.00!

The clips are easy and inexpensive and if you don't have time to stop by on Friday here are the directions.

Supplies: clothespins, card stock, red liner tape, exacto knife, modge podge, paint brush

Step one:
Apply a strip of red tape to one side of the clothespin

Step two:
Trim off excess tape

Step three:
Peel off tape backing

Step four:
Place clothespin, tape side down, onto back side of cardstock

Step five:
Trim around clothespin. Repeat steps 1-5 on opposite side of clothespin.

Step six:
Apply thin layer of Modge Podge or Diamond Glaze over top of paper.

Card Making Classes are here!

What better way to launch our blog than with the announcement
of two great card making classes! Mark your calendars for
Saturday, November 7th when Sherry Czarnecki from
Amuse Stamps will be here to teach you how to make 5 holiday
cards. There are two classes to choose from and you don't
need to have any prior stamping or card making experience!

Glimmer, Twinkle and Shine - Saturday, November 7th, 10:30am-12:30pm
Learn how to create snow with glitter & paper punching.
Basic Stamping skills will be taught and used in this simple class.

Elegant Holiday - Saturday, November 7th,
1:00pm-3:00pm
Basic stamping techniques will be taught in this class, coloring
with Copic markers, distressing with ranger distress ink
and heat embossing.

Classes are $20.00 each
Reservations are required for all classes and prepayment
is required with your reservation. Refunds will be given
on cancellations up to seven days in advance of the class
date. If you cannot attend a class you have reserved,
please let us know by calling 583-4084, so that we can
try to fill your spot. If we are able to fill your spot you
will receive a class credit for future use.
